The
Center has resources and tools available that may be used in our
offices or borrowed. A library of books and papers includes many
community planning references as well as information on water
well protection, Groundwater Fact sheets, information on our past
project areas, local zoning & master plan documents and a complete collection of USGS topographic maps
from the Center's service area. (These are available for reference
in the Center's office.) The Center has up-to-date tax parcel
maps for the City of Flint.
The
Center has the latest and most widely used and respected geographic
information system (GIS) software, used for mapping and geographic
information analyzing, and can provide GIS services to communities
or businesses. In addition, the Center has several global positioning
system units (GPS), used to identify exact locations on the earth's
surface in latitude and longitude and downloadable to a PC. Center
staff and University of Michigan-Flint students are available
to assist projects by collecting GPS points. A plotter is available
to print large format maps and posters in full color.
The
Center can also coordinate or facilitate in bringing together
like-minded individuals to work toward common goals within the
university and the community at large. The Center often brings
together University of Michigan-Flint professors and their students
to work with community members on various projects having to do
with GIS or planning. This arrangement allows students to refine
their skills and allows the university to showcase its programs.
