Academic Service Learning

Academic service learning is a teaching methodology that enables students to more fully grasp course concepts by engaging them in service projects identified by the community. Faculty use service learning to supplement more traditional methods of teaching, giving students hands-on opportunities that enhance their learning and provide needed services to the community.

In service learning, the focus is mutually on the student and the community. Students share their talents and resources with the intent of meeting a community need. In the process of providing a service, the student's understanding of the course objectives is deepened. Both the service and learning elements are necessary in order to create a true service learning experience for students.

Service learning allows students to:

  • Learn through practical application of concepts, content and skills from the academic disciplines
  • Share talents and resources with the community
  • Develop an awareness and understanding of diversity
  • Interact with community members and organizations
  • Develop a sense of social responsibility
  • Enhance their critical thinking skills
  • Meet community needs
  • Learn skills and values for civic engagement
